LUCIA PAPČOVÁ

statement

The project “Gained Spaces was realized during my residency at Banska Stanica, located in small city of Banska Stiavnica in central Slovakia, in November 2013. The city and its surrounding area has a rich mining history, with plenty of old abandoned mines.  I was exploring these spaces, which are aged from 8th-9th century until 20th, most of them mined manually. I was interested in spaces, created by human effort, yet having no use after the mining has ended.

Space and scale become abstract, together with the actual meaningless purpose of the “Gained Spaces”.
